OurBike in Lambeth: Cargo bikes for residents and businesses

Organisation
Lambeth Council

Theme
Transport

Start Date
Jun 2022

Goals
Shift modes, Net-zero freight

OurBike is an e-cargo bike hire scheme with 10 locations around the borough.

The scheme is open to residents and businesses, offering a greener alternative to carrying cargo or passengers around the borough while reducing traffic and road danger.

The Challenge

OurBike was started as part of Lambeth’s Big Shift programme in partnership with Peddle My Wheels (opens in a new window) due to the lack of options for people making midrange journeys that can’t easily be walked due to distance or needing to carry cargo. OurBike offers an alternative to cars or vans, helping to reduce traffic and road danger.

The scheme supports residents and businesses with ten locations across the borough, with four new locations installed in early 2025. The bikes are hosted by local organisations that help maintain them by keeping the battery charged and the tyres pumped. The existing locations are at:

Action Taken

As well as funding the new cargo bikes across the borough, Lambeth has been working with Peddle My Wheels to support new users who may not be familiar with riding cargo bikes by offering free cargo bike training to anyone who signs up.

This training can be done on your regular route to help you familiarise yourself with the journey. To encourage bike usage, we also offer 60 minutes free to new resident sign-ups and 180 minutes free to new business sign-ups.

The Results So Far

In 2024, OurBike was used 647 times, and when we asked the users what mode of transport the OurBike was replacing, 70% said that they were replacing a car or van trip. With more bikes being installed in 2025, we hope to see that number rise.

What can I do to help?

You can make your home or workplace cooler by improving insulation, adding shutters to windows, painting your roof and walls white, and increasing greenery

Opt for energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs to cut down on electricity use. Make it a habit to turn off lights and electronics when not in use, and unplug chargers to prevent phantom energy consumption.

Take steps to fix leaks in faucets and pipes, and install water-saving appliances and fixtures. Incorporate water conservation practices into your daily routine, such as turning off taps when not needed.

Consider using public transportation, carpooling, or ridesharing to reduce your carbon footprint. If possible, opt for fuel-efficient or electric vehicles, and explore alternative modes of transportation like walking or biking

Explore options like solar panels or wind turbines for home energy. Choose energy providers that prioritize renewable sources, and advocate for policies that encourage the use of clean energy.

Reduce meat consumption, particularly red meat, and opt for locally sourced and sustainably produced foods. Consider adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet to lower your environmental impact

Share information on climate change and its impacts with friends and family. Encourage sustainable practices, and support educational initiatives in your community to raise awareness.
