On average they now save over 600kg of CO2 emissions at each event

Repair Café Lambeth is an exciting voluntary initiative all about sharing fixing skills, reducing waste, and socialising! They bring together neighbours of all ages at inspiring and accessible meetings, encouraging everyone to work towards a Circular Economy by promoting the culture of repairing and re-using through a suite of local events.

Repair Café Lambeth host free events on the first Saturday of each month where - with help from volunteer fixers - people can bring back broken belongings back to life, saving them from landfill.

Across the first seven events in 2023, Repair Café Lambeth:

  • built a network of 159 volunteer fixers in Lambeth
  • fixed over 90% of items brought to our events
  • welcomed 973 local residents to the cafe
  • prevented 304kg of waste from landfill
  • prevented 2710kg of CO2

Having hit the ground running in 2024 - with over 200 attendees at their first two events of the year - they have accumulated 173 local fixer volunteers. At each of the events, 25 volunteers have been available to support participants with fixes, with a huge success rate. Volunteers have been able to fix over 90% of the items brought through the door including; phones, garments, suitcases, radios, laptops, sewing machines and many, many more items!

On average they now save over 600kg of CO2 emissions at each event, which is the equivalent of growing 10 tree seedings for 10 years!

What can I do to help?

You can make your home or workplace cooler by improving insulation, adding shutters to windows, painting your roof and walls white, and increasing greenery

Opt for energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs to cut down on electricity use. Make it a habit to turn off lights and electronics when not in use, and unplug chargers to prevent phantom energy consumption.

Take steps to fix leaks in faucets and pipes, and install water-saving appliances and fixtures. Incorporate water conservation practices into your daily routine, such as turning off taps when not needed.

Consider using public transportation, carpooling, or ridesharing to reduce your carbon footprint. If possible, opt for fuel-efficient or electric vehicles, and explore alternative modes of transportation like walking or biking

Explore options like solar panels or wind turbines for home energy. Choose energy providers that prioritize renewable sources, and advocate for policies that encourage the use of clean energy.

Reduce meat consumption, particularly red meat, and opt for locally sourced and sustainably produced foods. Consider adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet to lower your environmental impact

Share information on climate change and its impacts with friends and family. Encourage sustainable practices, and support educational initiatives in your community to raise awareness.
