Friends of the Earth Lambeth is a local environmental action group of residents working together to bring about environmental change.

As part of a larger network of FOE UK action groups, they are supported with plenty of expertise, training, resources and lobbying power.

In the last year, their activities have included participating in the Planet over Profit campaign to end environmental exploitation by big business. They have also worked with the Woodland Trust and partnered with Lambeth Tree Planting Programme to create more hedgerows in the borough, including planting new hedges in Vauxhall, Kennington and Camberwell.

Their team of volunteers helped plant an orchard on Clapham Common and in a Streatham housing estate, and have regularly taken part in an ongoing project to create a community healing garden in Vauxhall. They have also been involved in the London Blue Chain project to create more ponds in our borough.

Friends of the Earth Lambeth is now looking for more volunteers to help boost their work. There are plenty of opportunities available, suited to all levels of skill and experience. More details are provided below:

Campaigning: Volunteers can get involved in Friends of the Earth national campaigns to fight for climate justice through local grassroots action.

Lobbying: They will work to create a sustainable future by holding Lambeth council and the national government accountable for a greener, more sustainable future.

Event Planning: Volunteers will promote the work done through activities and events in the local community.

Communications: They will raise the profile of the work being done through social media.

Practical Action: Volunteers will roll up their sleeves to plant trees, dig ponds, and help create community gardens.

What is expected?

The group holds meetings in Lambeth for an hour once every three weeks, along with about three or four hours a month involved in activities.

Together, they aim to boost the impact of every local win, find inspiration in each other, and gain strength in numbers to push for significant national change!

What can I do to help?

You can make your home or workplace cooler by improving insulation, adding shutters to windows, painting your roof and walls white, and increasing greenery

Opt for energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs to cut down on electricity use. Make it a habit to turn off lights and electronics when not in use, and unplug chargers to prevent phantom energy consumption.

Take steps to fix leaks in faucets and pipes, and install water-saving appliances and fixtures. Incorporate water conservation practices into your daily routine, such as turning off taps when not needed.

Consider using public transportation, carpooling, or ridesharing to reduce your carbon footprint. If possible, opt for fuel-efficient or electric vehicles, and explore alternative modes of transportation like walking or biking

Explore options like solar panels or wind turbines for home energy. Choose energy providers that prioritize renewable sources, and advocate for policies that encourage the use of clean energy.

Reduce meat consumption, particularly red meat, and opt for locally sourced and sustainably produced foods. Consider adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet to lower your environmental impact

Share information on climate change and its impacts with friends and family. Encourage sustainable practices, and support educational initiatives in your community to raise awareness.
