Speakers

Richard Barwick - Director

Richard’s company, Coombs and Partners (opens in a new window), is a longstanding construction specialist focussed on the delivery of 'whole house' retrofit of houses and apartment blocks. The company is nearing completion of the Government's 'Heat Pump Ready' project, from which many significant learnings are now available. Barwick is also developing a 'smartrisk' management business based on their years of ‘real-world’ experience of improvement and refurbishment.

This will assist landlords and property owners in ultimately achieving considerable savings from deep retrofits. Richard Barwick is a member of the AECB and CIOB.

Jackson Bylett - Programme Lead

Jackson is the Programme Lead for the South Bank and Waterloo Sustains Us (opens in a new window) initiative, driving efforts to create a greener, fairer neighbourhood with clean air, green energy, and thriving nature – working towards net zero by 2030. With experience spanning the public and private sectors, he has worked on climate policy, flood risk mitigation and community resilience, and environmental planning. Jackson has previously led local authority energy support services and managed a heat network serving over 500 homes and community facilities in an inner London borough. Passionate about climate action, he is particularly interested in the potential of heat networks to support heat decarbonisation across London.

Rebecca Hall - Green Skills Hub Co-ordinator

Rebecca is an experienced project manager who started her career in technology but recently moved in the green sector.  She now runs the London South Bank University Green Skills Hub (opens in a new window), which helps the residents of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark find good net zero training and jobs. The Hub is a partnership between the local councils, training providers and employers. The LSBU Green Skill Hub especially focuses on helping diverse groups who face barriers to employment or career progression.

Bronwen Rice - Business Liaison and Project Management

Bronwen started working for Station to Station (opens in a new window) in 2018 and explores and leads on climate-related projects for the Business Improvement District (BID).  So far, they have been successful in being awarded grant funds from the GLA and UKSPF for their sustainability projects over the past few years. In 2023, the BID was chosen by the Grantham Climate Art Prize as one of the destinations for the Climate Art Mural. Bronwen will discuss the 'Green Grants 4 White Goods' project, funded by the UKSPF, which has given out 16 small grants to businesses to upgrade their white goods.

Jo Piskorz - Charity Administration Manager

Jo joined the Rathbone Society (opens in a new window) in early 2022 as the Charity Administration Manager. Jo is passionate about celebrating diversity in all its forms. Through their role at Rathbone, they strive to foster an inclusive culture through visible role modelling so everyone feels a true sense of belonging and purpose. Rathbone was a recipient of the 'Green Grants 4 White Goods' project from Station to Station.

What can I do to help?

You can make your home or workplace cooler by improving insulation, adding shutters to windows, painting your roof and walls white, and increasing greenery

Opt for energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs to cut down on electricity use. Make it a habit to turn off lights and electronics when not in use, and unplug chargers to prevent phantom energy consumption.

Take steps to fix leaks in faucets and pipes, and install water-saving appliances and fixtures. Incorporate water conservation practices into your daily routine, such as turning off taps when not needed.

Consider using public transportation, carpooling, or ridesharing to reduce your carbon footprint. If possible, opt for fuel-efficient or electric vehicles, and explore alternative modes of transportation like walking or biking

Explore options like solar panels or wind turbines for home energy. Choose energy providers that prioritize renewable sources, and advocate for policies that encourage the use of clean energy.

Reduce meat consumption, particularly red meat, and opt for locally sourced and sustainably produced foods. Consider adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet to lower your environmental impact

Share information on climate change and its impacts with friends and family. Encourage sustainable practices, and support educational initiatives in your community to raise awareness.
