Lambeth has secured government funding to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions from homes in the borough.
Lambeth Council has secured funding from two government energy efficiency schemes, Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund and Warm Homes: Local Grants, as part of the Warmer Homes London (opens in a new window), to implement energy saving upgrades that could help families save on their bills.
Social Housing
Following funding secured in May 2024 (opens in a new window), nearly £1 million has been awarded to make 121 council homes warmer and greener on Blenheim Gardens Estate and Leigham Court Estate. Some homes will be improved with new insulation, draught proofing, and windows, while others could benefit from solar panels and modern energy efficient lighting.
Lambeth Council is part of a strategic partnership of 27 boroughs and housing associations led by the London Borough of Camden seeking to deliver healthier, more efficient homes at scale. Collectively, the partnership will be investing nearly £200 million to improve thousands of homes as part of Warmer Homes London, launched by the Mayor of London earlier this year. Working together enables us to work more efficiently, secure greater value, and build local skills and a supply chain to deliver more energy efficient housing.
Private Homes
Lambeth Council has also been awarded funding as part of the Greater London Authority Consortium of 31 local authorities. The investment will support energy savings measures for low income households in privately owned or privately rented homes with an EPC rating of D or worse. Successful applicants could be awarded up to £15,000 to help with retrofit improvements.
More information on how to apply for private homes will be available soon.
“Everyone in Lambeth deserves to live in warmer, more comfortable homes with less damp and mould and lower energy bills, and we are determined to do all that we can to achieve this.
“By tackling the energy efficiency of Lambeth’s social housing stock, we are taking a big step in making Lambeth a borough where people live, work, and learn in comfortable, affordable, efficient buildings powered by renewable energy and adaptable to the impacts of climate change.”
Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air
More Information
Lambeth’s Climate Action Plan, published in March 2022, aims to retrofit all of Lambeth’s existing buildings (residential & non-residential) to an average of EPC level C or higher by 2030.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNEZ) has awarded both grants as part of its Warm Homes Plan.
The council will begin to deliver the schemes in April 2025 and will complete them over the next three to five years.
